What the regulation allows

Film may be fitted to the rear side door windows only. Not the front windscreen, not the rear windscreen, and not the driver or front passenger windows. It must be of the shaded type, not the reflective type, and it requires a written permit from the Traffic Department. That is Article 75 of the Executive Regulations of the Traffic Law — Minister of Interior Decision 6 of 2010, published in the Official Gazette, issue 7, 27 July 2010.

The two exceptions

Article 76 allows the whole car to be tinted in two cases only. First, on a medical report from the competent authority, for the period the report specifies — that permit is personal to the applicant and does not transfer with the car. Second, for vehicles of certain ministries, government bodies and diplomatic missions. There is no third route.

Where the percentages come from

You will hear 10% and 20% quoted across Doha, and you will find them in guides online. They are not in the regulation. We read all 193 articles: there is no percentage, no visible-light figure, and no mention of a measuring device anywhere in the text. Those numbers appear to be administrative practice reported second-hand, and different sources give different ones. Ask anyone quoting a percentage which article it comes from.

What it costs to get it wrong

Article 95 of the Traffic Law sets imprisonment of one week to one year and a fine of QAR 3,000 to 10,000, or either. On a repeat offence within a year, Article 98 doubles the minimum. And under Article 88, the Director of Traffic may impound the vehicle for up to ninety days. The QR 3,000 figure quoted online is the floor, not the fine.

The permit

Through the Ministry of Interior e-services portal or the Metrash app: Traffic Services, then Vehicles, then the glass tinting permit. Choose the vehicle, choose whether to collect from the Traffic Department or have it posted, and pay. The fee is QR 20, with an additional charge for postal delivery. It is issued immediately, and it arrives as a reissued vehicle registration card carrying the permit — so the permit lives on your Istimara, not on a separate paper.

Three questions worth asking any studio

If a studio in Doha cannot answer these three, it is guessing with your car.

• Which windows are you allowed to film? The answer is the rear side doors. Anything else needs a medical permit.
• Will you fit darker than the law allows if I ask? The right answer is no. A studio that breaks the rule for you will cut a corner you cannot see.
• Which article are you quoting? Ours is Article 75 of Minister of Interior Decision 6 of 2010. If a shop quotes a percentage instead, ask where it is written.

How we do it

We fit to the rear side windows, we tell you what the regulation says before you commit, and we decline to go beyond it. If you hold a medical permit we will read it and work to what it allows. If you want the front glass darkened because everyone else does it, we will say no — politely, but we will say no.
